Sri Lanka Expands Colombo Port to Enhance Regional Transshipment Hub Status

Sri Lanka is undertaking significant developments to expand Colombo Port and maintain its position as a key regional transshipment hub. The West Container Terminal (WCT) led by Adani Ports is set to handle 3.5 million TEUs annually, with the first phase operational by 2024-2025. A $1 billion investment is driving this project, while a feasibility study for WCT 2 is underway, expected to be ready in five years. The Colombo North Port development, a private investment-driven initiative, is also in the conceptual stage, aiming for at least four terminals. The East Container Terminal (ECT) and West Container Terminal will collectively add 7.5 million TEUs to Colombo Port's capacity by 2025.
