The Port of Salalah in Oman has experienced an impressive 18.3% increase in general cargo volumes at its General Cargo Terminal during the first nine months of 2023. The terminal's throughput reached 15.817 million tonnes, primarily driven by exports of minerals and petrochemicals such as limestone, gypsum, methanol, and cement to nearby markets. Despite a seasonal slowdown in the third quarter due to khareef weather, the port remains on track to achieve its ambitious target of reaching 20 million tonnes by the year-end. In contrast, the Container Terminal witnessed a 13.4% dip in throughput due to an ongoing upgrade project aimed at accommodating Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The completion of this upgrade in Q1 2025 is expected to attract significant container traffic, with global shipping giant Maersk committing to routing mega containerships through the Omani hub.
