ISWAN Annual Review: Continued High Demand for Seafarer Support Amid Ongoing Challenges

The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) reports sustained high demand for its services during the last financial year, despite the easing of exceptional stresses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual review highlights that life remains challenging for many seafarers. ISWAN assisted 8,602 seafarers and family members from 98 nationalities, with a 6% increase in new cases. Financial difficulties, abuse, bullying, harassment, discrimination, and violence emerged as major concerns. Contacts related to these issues, particularly financial difficulties, doubled compared to the previous year. The report also emphasizes the disproportionate impact of these challenges on women seafarers. Psychological health problems, the impact of war or piracy attacks, and contractual issues were also prominent. ISWAN's dedicated helplines and mental health awareness training sessions have gained recognition, with increased collaboration and support from employers in the maritime industry. ISWAN acknowledges its principal funders and partners for their crucial role in supporting seafarers globally.
