The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has shared its recent initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships at the United Nations Climate Change conference (COP 28) in Dubai. The presentation included an overview of the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy, which commits to achieving net-zero GHG emissions in international shipping by or around 2050. The strategy emphasizes the uptake of zero or near-zero emission technologies, fuels, and energy sources, aiming for at least 5% (with a target of 10%) by 2030. The IMO also highlighted its ongoing efforts to support a just transition in shipping, particularly for seafarers, and outlined measures to improve energy efficiency. Further actions, including a goal-based marine fuel standard and a maritime GHG emissions pricing mechanism, are under consideration for adoption in 2025. The IMO will participate in various events during COP 28, emphasizing collaboration to achieve decarbonization goals in the shipping industry.
