The Indian government's initiative to establish green hydrogen hubs at key ports has gained momentum, particularly at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu and Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat. In a mid-term review meeting, Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted progress in developing green infrastructure, with a focus on hydrogen parks. Deendayal Port in Kandla has received responses from 13 prospective developers for its green hydrogen hubs, totaling over 7 MMTPA capacity in green ammonia production. Statkraft, Europe's largest renewable energy generator, has signed an MoU with Deendayal Port Authority for green hydrogen production. Similarly, V O Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu has allocated 500 acres for a green hydrogen hub and signed an MoU with NTPC Green Energy Ltd for a Green Hydrogen/Derivative Production Facility. The Global Maritime India Summit also witnessed MoUs worth over Rs. 10 lakh crores, with green initiatives accounting for Rs. 3.8 lakh crores. Proposals for grants to support common infrastructure for green hydrogen projects are underway with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This signals a significant step towards a sustainable and eco-friendly future for Indian ports.
