The Union Cabinet is expected to grant approval for the development of the International Container Transhipment Port (ICTP) at Galathea Bay, Great Nicobar Island, by the end of the year. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 44,000 crore, will be implemented in four phases, with the first phase operational by 2028 and a capacity of approximately 4 million TEUs. The strategic location of Galathea Bay aims to position the port as a leading container transshipment hub, leveraging its proximity to international shipping routes. The project, recently granted environmental clearance, is part of the comprehensive development plan for Great Nicobar Island and is expected to bring significant economic benefits, including foreign exchange savings, increased foreign direct investment, and enhanced economic activity at Indian ports.
