In a groundbreaking initiative, the Netherlands is set to launch the Den Bosch Max Groen, the first inland vessel operating entirely on Zero Emission Services (ZES) technology in April 2024. The vessel, prepared for electric sailing during construction, will use standard 20-foot modular energy containers (ZESpacks) and feature a fixed battery package. Initiators Inland Terminals Group (ITG), Nedcargo, and ZES plan to introduce four more vessels in the future. The ZESpacks will be charged using the latest generation of 2x 1MVA charging stations, capable of charging in just three hours. The innovative pay-per-use billing model and green energy sourced through Dutch Guarantee of Origin certificates make this project a sustainable and emissions-reducing endeavor, with an expected annual reduction of 715 tonnes of CO2 and 13 tonnes of NOx for the Den Bosch Max Groen alone. Expansion of the zero-emission fleet is anticipated to further enhance environmental benefits. Charging stations will be strategically placed, with the first one scheduled for development in Alblasserdam in Q1 2024.
