"Sustainable First Mover Initiatives: A New Paradigm for Shipping and Port Communities"

The transition to electrofuels is poised to reshape the global fuel market, offering new opportunities, particularly for developing countries. Ports, serving as crucial hubs for transport and energy systems, will play a pivotal role in this transition. The concept of Sustainable First Mover Initiatives (SFMIs) is introduced, aligning with the 1.5°C Paris Agreement climate target while delivering social, economic, and environmental co-benefits for both the shipping industry and port communities. An SFMI identification tool, developed by Environmental Defense Fund and Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonization Hub in collaboration with Arup, allows stakeholders to assess a port's potential for electrofuel production and bunkering while considering local clean energy access, land suitability, and decarbonization efforts. Preliminary results highlight high potential in ports like Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in India and Chittagong port in Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of inclusive and sustainable development in the shipping sector. The tool offers customization for stakeholders based on their specific goals and objectives, setting the stage for a more comprehensive port-level analysis in collaboration with local shipping stakeholders in the second phase of the project.
