A collaborative training project, funded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Lloyd’s Register Foundation, aims to equip seafarers with the skills required to operate zero or near-zero emission ships. The project, announced at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28), responds to the Maritime Just Transition Task Force's findings that 800,000 seafarers may need additional training by the mid-2030s for the industry's decarbonization. The training framework, focusing on green technologies like hydrogen and ammonia, seeks to ensure a just transition for seafarers as the shipping industry moves towards its goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
